Joyful Necessity

The beautiful appearance of the world of dreams, in whose creation each man is a complete artist, is the condition of all plastic art, indeed, as we shall see, an important half of poetry. We enjoy the form with an immediate understanding, all shapes speak to us, nothing is indifferent and unnecessary.
- Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy (1871)

Aristotle thought the blood in our veins just sat there. He wrote long before it was discovered that blood pumps through our veins. He thought the blood was still - except when we were moving, it sort-of splashed around inside us a bit. Like when you're holding a cup of water and walking. When we fall asleep, our bodies are still. The blood settles.
He also thought our sensations caused reflections of the surface of the blood in our brains. When we look at a flower, our senses perceive the flower not as if the actual object was in our mind but as it reflects itself on our blood.
When we are asleep and still, the left-over sensory reflections are able to settle. They mix, our imagination takes hold of them and images move across the surface of our blood. At least that's how I imagine it to happen.

But my favorite dreams are those that tell us something more than what we've already percieved. They tell us more than even our imagination could possibly know. Well, they don't tell us per say. I'm mostly thinking of Twin Peaks. How could Agent Cooper be receiving so much information through his unconscious thoughts? What does it say about him? What do my dreams tell me? How does one decode the nonsense of a nightmare? I haven't a clue.
The next time Bob visits me in my dreams, maybe I'll ask him.

on sex work

I'd like to first point out that these are just my opinions, and that they are coming from a place of solidarity and not of experience. I am not trying to speak for sex-workers - I am only trying to start a conversation! I think it's necessary to actively think about these things in order to make any real shift in consciousness. Sex Work is Real Work We are constantly bombarded with the message that sex workers are troubled. Watching day-time television I have witnessed Dr. Phil repeatedly demonize sex work and those who participate in it. It’s dirty, and dangerous; they must have suffered as a child or lacked a fatherly figure. The two-dimensional stereotype attached to sex-work is ignorant and perpetuates a culture of violence against innocent people who are just doing their job (which there is and likely always will be a market for, I might add). There may be risks that come with a line of work which often requires secrecy and vulnerability (to some extent), but ...

half a year later

Oops, I didn't post for half a year. Turns out doing a PhD is a lot of work! It's summer now, though, so that excuse doesn't work. I've fallen behind on almost all of my internet responsibilities - except for instagram, which I use more than anything else at the moment. Only a month and a half left of summer then I dive back into school. Trying to enjoy the time I have right now, just existing in montreal, learning french and seeing friends and spending all my money on food. Here's what you may have missed from the past 6 months:  Butterball had surgery on his entropion! Thank you to everyone who donated to help us afford this surgery for him. He is so so much happier now. All healed up!  My brother and my niece (not his daughter, my other brother's daughter lol) xoxo
